(More customer reviews)I've looked for months for an automatic to replace a Citizen quartz I'd worn for the last eight years.

I came very close to buying a TAG Heuer Carrera but chose to shop for automatics with smaller price tags out of fear that I'd bump a display in the grocery store, scratch the case, and go home sick for blemishing a four-figure watch.

Before buying a Stuhrling Original for myself, I bought a popular Skeleton model for a Christmas gift and got to take a good look at the quality of that watch.The pics didn't do it justice (neither do these), so I didn't hesitate to buy another from the company - the Piattino Di Volo model.

I'm thrilled with the craftsmanship. The raised numerals on the dial add depth to the face and - while you can't tell very well from the photos - the center of the dial integrates a subtle swirl pattern.The top of the case is brushed leaving another swirl pattern, and the crystal sits flush with the case.The hands and small dots corresponding with the hour markings glow in the dark, but they're very subtle and hardly noticeable in normal lighting conditions.

As far as the movement is concerned, the secondhand glides in quarter-second intervals, and checking the time against an iPhone the watch only deviated 8 seconds in 24 hours - another pleasant surprise.The time on the smaller dial has not deviated noticably from the main dial.

The band's adjustment mechanism reminds me of the TAG I tried on. When I bought the watch, after reading other reviews, I was expecting to replace the band quickly (that it would be of poor quality).No way.When I do replace the band, if I can order an original I will.

Finally, both the watch I gave and this model passed the compliment test.The gift watch was taken to a local jeweler who took some links out of the band (by the way, the Winchester Elite Skeleton band has pins even though it appears to have screws).The jeweler said, "That's a beautiful watch."A co-worker saw mine and immediately came to Amazon looking for his own.

The only reason I almost didn't buy this watch was its very high list price compared to the price I paid.To be fair, I've not seen a Stuhrling Original being sold anywhere for close to its list.It made me very skeptical of the quality of the product - "if it looks too good to be true..." as they say.

Ultimately, I bought this watch for value - not "worth."I wanted a high-quality automatic watch for a price that wasn't inflated by having a haughty logo attached. It was a great purchase.

Now, I'm back on Amazon adding other Stuhrling Original watches to my Wish List.
